人工の海など地球の生態系が再現され、隔離環境での生活研究が可能な米アリゾナ州の巨大施設「バイオスフィア2」で8月上旬、火星移住を想定し、日米の宇宙飛行士や学生による共同実習が実施される。一方、同じ日に、gizmodoでは「Humans Will Never Colonize Mars」という記事も見ました。英文ではあるが、同記事は火星という星の厳しい環境を（相対的に）以下のように簡潔に纏めてあります。
参加する京都大の学生らが30日、学内で記者会見し、理学部2年平井颯さん（19）は「有人宇宙探査の仕事に携わるのが夢。いつか、火星でフィールドワークできるようになれば」と話した。
「The Red Planet is a cold, dead place, with an atmosphere about 100 times thinner than Earth’s. The paltry amount of air that does exist on Mars is primarily composed of noxious carbon dioxide, which does little to protect the surface from the Sun’s harmful rays. Air pressure on Mars is very low; at 600 Pascals, it’s only about 0.6 percent that of Earth. You might as well be exposed to the vacuum of space, resulting in a severe form of the bends—including ruptured lungs, dangerously swollen skin and body tissue, and ultimately death. The thin atmosphere also means that heat cannot be retained at the surface. The average temperature on Mars is -81 degrees Fahrenheit (-63 degrees Celsius), with temperatures dropping as low as -195 degrees F (-126 degrees C). By contrast, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth was at Vostok Station in Antarctica, at -128 degrees F (-89 degrees C) on June 23, 1982. Once temperatures get below the -40 degrees F/C mark, people who aren’t properly dressed for the occasion can expect hypothermia to set in within about five to seven minutes.火星まで掛かる時間やコストを抜きにしても、火星上での生活は過酷そのものであり、長期的な滞在は地球上で考えられるすべての「罰ゲーム」よりも惨めです。
Mars also has less mass than is typically appreciated. Gravity on the Red Planet is 0.375 that of Earth’s, which means a 180-pound person on Earth would weigh a scant 68 pounds on Mars. While that might sound appealing, this low-gravity environment would likely wreak havoc to human health in the long term, and possibly have negative impacts on human fertility. 」
火星地表の引力は地球の3分の1以下ですので、人工的に作られる空間にすまない限り、中期的な健康障害が発生します。つまり、常に特殊な密封空間にしかいられないことです。それは、巨大な建造物か、移動できる輸送機器か、宇宙服の中にしかいられないことです。
それでも、火星移住を唱えている連中がいます。唱えるところか、様々なプロジェクトを立ち上げて、お金を巻き上げています。人間がすめるように火星を「改造」する研究もされています。
百歩、いや、一万歩を譲っても、火星に移住するよりは、地球上のどんな「住みにくい」、「住めない」箇所に「移住」するのは、遥かに楽なものであり、現実的なものです。
それ以前に、地球をもっと大事にする努力をいまから始めても遅くありません。そうしなければいけません。
火星移住なんかの空想、暴走をやめなければ、地球の破滅はより確実になるだけでしょう。
